It's summertime, which means it's the best time of year to load up your Jeep and ride off on the open road with your boating gear to hit the beach or a nearby lake. However, you might worry about how much weight your Jeep can handle.

Light Duty towing vehicles, also called Class I, can tow up to 2,000 lb, so only the lightest and smallest boats are suitable for towing with these vehicles.

  • Jeep Compass
  • Jeep Patriot
  • Jeep Renegade (pictured above - only when equipped with Trailer Tow Package)

Medium Duty or Class II vehicles can tow up to 3,500 lb and are good for small watercraft like canoes or kayaks and small aluminum boats.

  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Heavy Duty/Class III vehicles tow up to 6,000 lb and is one of the most common hitches for recreational boating and watercraft, such as jet skis and other small boats mentioned above. You may also be able to bring larger personal boats depending on the weight.

Rated up to 10,000 lb, Extra Heavy Duty or Class IV vehicles are great for any sort of boat that you feel doesn't fit into the other categories, or if a boat when wet and loaded with luggage surpasses the aforementioned weight classes.

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee (only when equipped with Trailer Tow Group IV)
